FORT KNOX, KY–At what is usually a boisterous gathering, Keith Johnson, CEO of First Federal Savings Bank called for a moment of silence for the victims and families of the Fort Hood terror attack that occurred on November 5th, just the day before. Following this observance, he announced to the golfers for this third annual event that all of the proceeds collected would be donated as the inaugural funding of the USA Cares Fort Hood Family Emergency Fund.
Bill Nelson, USA Cares Executive Director made himself available to accept the donation and thanked all those present for their on-going support on behalf of his charitable organization and the military veterans and families who will benefit from their generosity. Later, in the hectic schedule he faced in the aftermath of the Fort Hood news, Nelson would remark “The consistency of support in this community is almost overwhelming. Do you realize that in the last three years, First Federal Savings Bank has donated nearly $40,000 to help veterans and their families? This kind of commitment to us and to their neighbors who wear the uniform is a very gratifying and humbling experience. I cannot imagine any greater support anywhere else in the world than our troops have right here in this community.”
The proceeds from this year’s event will probably exceed $14,000 noted Larry Hawkins, Executive Vice President of First Federal speaking to Roger Stradley, Founder of USA Cares. “We enjoy doing this for USA Cares. This year’s event was originally scheduled for October but heavy rain caused us to postpone. Yesterday we all had a reminder of how important it is for us to help our military service members and their families. No one would expect anything approaching the magnitude of loss on a military installation except for a training accident or other calamity. We know that we are lucky to have an all volunteer force and we need to be ready to assist them in anyways we can.”
